Artist Interview: Curtis Raye
Tell us about yourself and your music
I began playing the 12 string Guitar in High School…..1971. Played a few night clubs in the early 80’s, all original songs I had written. Lived in Las Vegas from 1994 through 2010 and performed in a “Tribute” Country Show for a few years. I was the ONLY Vince Gill Impersonator in Las Vegas.
I am playing “Jams” here in Wichita, Kansas and putting a “One” Man show together…..I call “Lecture Theater.” This show, named after my 3rd book “Metabolic Mission,” combines Dramatic story telling, special effects, a slide show, original and Pop music, to share my personal story of OVERCOMING Liver Cancer, Diabetes, Polycythemia and related Metabolic Disorders……on Metabolic Therapy. We plan on premiering in Las Vegas and traveling across America to perform in Major Universities.
Talk to us more about your latest release
“Join Hands,” is a Gospel song that I wrote, arranged and recorded in 1991, for the Governor of Kansas. That year she gave me the “I Believe I Can Achieve” award for overcoming liver cancer and several other Metabolic disorders. The choir that also sings on this record is the “Paradise Baptist Choir,” in Wichita, Kansas. It is comprised of the five Sisters and Mother of Barry Sanders. Barry won the Heisman Trophy in 1988 and played for the Detroit Lions. The music video for this song is on you tube, as well as on my Business Web Site….www.themetabolicinstitute.com. Go to the “Dr. Kuhn” page and scroll down to the YouTube video at the bottom of the page.
What inspired you to write this release?
When Governor Joan Finney of Kansas contacted me to receive this award, I was compelled to write a Gospel song for her Anti-Drug campaign. I actually wrote the lyrics and music in an hour or so, then went into the studio and finished over the next week.
Any plans to release a video?
We have the original music video that the Governor’s office filmed, that actually was played on a wide screen at the State Capital, when I performed at the Award Ceremony. I then combined the song with the video……to make an excellent music video.
In 1994, Rodell Records of Hollywood, Produced “Raw Cuts,” a compilation CD, that featured my song “Join Hands,” along with 19 other original Artists. We spoke with a couple of Major Labels, but never got a recording contract.
Any plans to hit the road?
This year, once I have completed my show “Metabolic Mission,” I will debut it and either perform in Universities, and/or in Las Vegas, in a Major Casino. It is the FIRST Original show of its kind, that combines my incredible story, along with slides. original and pop music and special effects, to both entertain and educate each audience. Although Dr. Kelley’s Metabolic Nutritional Science was conceived in the early 60’s, it is just BEGINNING to be understood by the Medical Community, as well as the General Public.
We also have a Screenplay being written, which will SOON become a Dynamic Movie. My Screenwriter, Steven Esteb, has a current NEW Movie out…..called “Hate Crime.” Google it and watch the 3 minute Trailer. We are excited about this project.
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
Yes, My original music has always been in a class of its own. In 1989, when I performed 3 original #’s with my lead Guitar player, Gene Hunt, as we opened for a band here in Wichita, Kansas, Gene told me that he had NEVER worked with an artist that wrote like I do. Gene was the LEAD Guitar player for Hank Williams SENIOR wayyyyyy back. Gene was only 14 years old at the time.
Who have you been listening to lately?
I enjoy Jazz……..Motown and New Age. Still Gospel also. Varied Artists.
Tell us about your passions
Metabolic Nutritional science. I have been a Metabolic Therapist now for over 31 years. I almost died back in 1986, but survived and rebuilt my body. Something Medical Science STILL cannot get a grasp on. I am preparing for another International talk show and speaking tour, to promote my 3rd book, Movie and Show “Metabolic Mission.”
What else is happening next in your world?
An Album…….comprised of the songs I will be doing in my Lecture Theater. Also, as I lived in Las Vegas for almost 20 years and LOVE the Desert, may move back there.
Thanks for an awesome interview, Dr. Curtis!
