Artist Interview: Voodoo Kings

Artist Interview: Voodoo Kings

Tell us about yourself and your music

I am a singer, songwriter, and guitar player that has been leading the band the VOODOO KINGS for quite some time. I have also been a sideman for many groups and have been a freelance audio engineer for quite a while as well.

Talk to us more about your latest release

The VOODOO KINGS’ latest release is entitled “Faith & Whiskey” which is what I usually run on these days. All the songs were written by me and were supported through the process with the other players in the band. It is always fun to go through the process of making a new release. There are always challenges and opportunities throughout the process.

What inspired you to write this release?

I think the biggest reason for the new release is to stay relevant and active as an artist. The longer you are on that road as an artist, it seems to get more satisfying. I think you have to look around every once in a while and figure out where you are as a person and player and try and apply those observations to the music.

Any plans to release a video?

Any plans to hit the road?

The VOODO KINGS will be at

Maddie’s Biergarten, Castle Rock , CO ~ 5/12 8pm

The Walnut Room in Denver, CO ~5/18 9pm

40th Annual Bolder Boulder Race, Boulder, CO ~ 5/28

As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?

Wow, well that’s a tough question. I think its really important as an artist to make sure you are as active as you can be on social media platforms. That is where you are engaging with fans and the way folks find new music. You have to be able to do that as much as possible but keep a balance and understand the music is what matters, without it, everything else falls away. Your brand is your brand, be careful with it and nurture it.

Who have you been listening to lately?

Blackberry Smoke, Kendrick Lamar, Beastie Boys, and always a healthy dose of the blues from Muddy Waters to Buddy Guy and BB King.

Tell us about your passions

What else is happening next in your world?

The next thing to do is to start writing more music. Continue with the process and find those songs which are floating around in my head. I think it’s important to continue to write even when you have just finished something and to continue to hone that skill set.

Thanks for an awesome interview, Michael!
