Golden Plates 2020

Tell us about yourself and your music

I was born the son of a poor sharecropper… no, wait, that’s Steve Martin in The Jerk. I was born the son of a con artist. The name Golden Plates comes from when I had finished my first EP and had no idea what to name the project. I was going to call it something lame like “the Brycen Deters Experience”, until a friend pointed out that I’d just moved to Utah and that Golden Plates would be a fitting moniker.

My music is mostly about loss; of family, religion, hope, love, and eventually, the life we all lose, and dealing with it. I listen to a lot of The Cure, Interpol, Radiohead, Queens of the Stone Age and The Kills, which I’m sure stands out in my music.

Talk to us more about your latest release

My latest release, Farewell to Zion, is a homecoming album. I’d recently moved back to California from Utah after 5 years. There’s a song about running from your problems, a song about the Donner party, a song about thinking you’re in love with the bartender after a few beverages, a song about patricide… It’s a lot of fun.

What inspired you to write this release?

After moving back to California, I’d got to spend some great quality time with my kid brother, and got some great memories of how screwed up our family is, like most families. Being back home reminded me of some lost loves and lost friends, and the places we used to go. The insane cost of living and the price of alcohol forced me to remember a bit more vividly than I wanted to.

Describe the writing and recording process

I lived in a small old 5th wheel trailer behind a vineyard in the middle of nowhere while I was writing and recording this album. I’d spend time wandering through the wilderness with my acoustic and make notes on my phone until I had a song. I’d converted the kitchen into a recording studio and was living on microwaveable foods due to the limitations of replacing the propane cylinder on a moped, so the kitchen wasn’t being used anyways. When a song was done, I’d record, layer, and mix all the parts myself until the album was finished.

Any plans to release a video?

Any plans to hit the road?

I wish. I just played the Santa Ana Noise Festival not too long ago, and things are in the works, but I love performing live.

As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?

I used to dress up as a missionary on a quest to spread the gospel of rock and roll to the heathens, but that gradually started to feel a bit gimmicky by my third release. I’m working on revamping that image, but I think the music should speak above anything else. I’ve been doing a series of cover songs on my YouTube #coversongtuesday and I’d love to get other artists to take part in it.

Who have you been listening to lately?

Warpaint, Black Pistol Fire, Beck, The Black Angels, Bright Eyes and David Bowie have been big on my Spotify recently.

Who are your biggest influences?

The Cure and David Bowie are the big ones. I have a passionate love for all genres of Rock and Roll, however, and you can find a beautiful history of it in my songwriting. As Pablo Picasso allegedly originally stated, “good artists borrow, great artists steal”. All of my favorite artists have paid homage to the greats that have come before them.

Tell us about your passions

When I’m not working on my own music, I’m doing audio and lighting for other artists, or the occasional corporate conference (gotta pay the bills). Music is my sole passion. There’s not much room in my life for anything else. I love to cook and try to cook for others any chance I get.

What else is happening next in your world?

Big things are coming soon. Golden Plates 2020!
