BaneMarie takes us back to the roots of modern rock.

BaneMarie takes us back to the roots of modern rock.

Tell us about yourself and your music

Hi, I’m Erv Felker and I sing for an Oklahoma band called BaneMarie. We are a 5 piece group: Erv Felker- vocals, Kyle Stessney- Lead guitars, Dan Webb- rhythm guitar, Kyle Newlun- bass, and Daniel Mitchell on drums. We play a style similar to the 90s alternative with a modern spin. Think QOTSA meets TOOL.

Talk to us more about your latest release

We have released a 3 song EP that is available on all digital media platforms. We recorded the tracks ourselves and they were mixed and mastered by Chris a Graham Studios. We are currently recording new tracks to be released later this year (2020).

What inspired you to write this release?

The band, in the previous form, was called Icarus. Due to licensing issues, the name was changed, however, we used the Icarus/Greek Tragedy them when writing the first ten tracks or so together.

Describe the writing and recording process

Writing the songs is pretty straight forward. Lead guitarist Kyle Stessney or bassist Kyle Newlun would bring in a set of riffs and the band would build cohesive tracks with these. After getting the tracks recorded at rehearsal in their final form, I would take them and listen to them on repeat until I had a melody and possible storyline to accompany it. I would then write out a rough draft on the iPad and try the different melodies live during rehearsal.

We would then set a recording date and I’d go back and fine-tune the lyrics so the flow was there. Daniel Mitchell acted as engineer and producer as we recorded instrument by instrument and we would all be present, suggesting changes or edits along the way. Once we had everything tracked on Reaper we made sure all of our levels were correct and all the instruments were present sonically.

Daniel Mitchell has discovered Chris Graham Studios and sent them a 6 song demo to see if we wanted to work with them. They returned our mail with a few changes that had to be made and in short order supplied us with several mix versions to choose from. After a week or two, we decided to use the 3 tracks on the EP and the studio sent us mastered copies. We are happy with the end state.

Any plans to release a video?

Any plans to hit the road?

We are Currently recording and plan to start gigging in the Tulsa area after the New Year.

As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?

We are certainly one of the dying few Alternative/Grunge bands still playing.

Who have you been listening to lately?

Mastodon, Queens of the Stone Age, TOOL, Foo Fighters.

Who are your biggest influences?

Classic Rock from Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath to Pantera and TOOL. Everything in between.

Tell us about your passions

Our passion like most bands today is trying to create new music that not only appeals to us but a larger audience. We are all middle-aged guys going through middle-aged drama and raising families. It can lead you down a path of its own.

What else is happening next in your world?

We will continue to write great music and record as much as possible.
