Artist Interview: Reel Lyph

Tell us about yourself and your music

I’m 32 years old and have been making music for over 15years now. Even when I say that it still seems surreal. Honestly, I got in so much trouble and burned so many bridges I never really thought making music would be full-time. Then I got tired… Just could not do the rat race anymore. So I started my own production company and have not looked back since. I went back to school to get a better music foundation almost three years ago now and it has been a game changer. Just having a better understanding of what was in my head and how to get it out and into a composition has been tremendous in my growth. Today I am focused on my church, my family, and my music. Putting in long hours in the studio and continually learning new tricks and skills to craft greater sounding and feeling compositions. Really not sure where this journey will take me but I am ready to see what God has in-stored for me.

Talk to us more about your latest release

My latest release I really wanted to create something that was hip-hop but with some classical elements and a big stadium type sound. Most people who know me know I always try to make sure my compositions say hip-hop but do not follow the industry standards. I think this track really helps showcase my skills and love for hip-hop. Using nice chord voicing, big drum kit, and some layering techniques. I also used three different guitars to create the melody, the arpeggio, and stab like power guitar.

 

 

What inspired you to write this release?

I was inspired by NF, and Rag ‘N’ Bone Man to create this track. I have always liked the stadium type sound and just their overall music compositions. There always big sounding and beautiful!

As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?

As an Indie artist, it is key for me to stand out from the rest. So I really try to make sure that my productions tell a story and make you feel something. I have always believed if I can get people to feel the emotions behind the beat then I have done my job. Music should make you feel something and it is my opportunity to put how I feel on a track and hopefully, create something the listener can just put on sit back and relax or just process life and its ebbs and flows.

Who have you been listening to lately?

Been listening to the Beatles a lot lately, Especially Eleanor Rigby! I love the orchestral sound they were able to achieve at a time when technology was very minimal. I also have been listening to some early Ska, reggae, NF, Rag ‘N’ Bone Man, DJ Khaled, Toby Mac, Lecrae, and Drake.

Tell us about your passions

Besides making music these days I get out of the bed because God allows me to, but more so because I get to work with the youth at my church and hopefully stir one of them into a better future without making some of the silly mistakes I have made in life. Then it is because of my wife, our kids and just family (not all blood-related!). They motivate me to be better and keep pushing the ceiling! Love all of you!

What else is happening next in your world?

Not sure where I am going next or what I will do next. For now just staying in the studio experimenting and working on crafting sound. Also, there are plans in the works to begin work on a new album! Something I have always wanted to do! Other than that we are just continue enjoying the journey and having fun!
