James Crawford’s Self-Titled Debut CD
He played the guitar and sang. He tracked the dobro, mandolin, and
piano. He arranged strings and horns. He recorded, mixed and produced.
James Crawford’s self-titled debut is many things, but a “collaboration”
isn’t one of them. The newly-released CD by the long-time Nashville
musician is the culmination of six years of individual effort.
Inspired
by artists with clear musical vision like Elvis Costello, Lyle Lovett
and Tom Waits, James set out to learn how to make records with a Mac Pro
running Pro Tools and a head full of ideas. Along the way he wrote
dozens of new songs, built a recording studio, learned to play several
new instruments, and researched the fundamentals of mixing and producing
records. The resulting CD is a testimony to human ingenuity and the
artist’s deft songwriting.
After years of collaborative work in Nashville, James felt he needed to try something different. He’d had some success as a writer, scoring a #21 Billboard hit for Every Mother’s Nightmare with “Love Can Make You Blind”. He’d played with numerous talented artists, including a stint as lead guitarist for recording artist Brad Cotter. These experiences, while wonderful, still left him feeling unfulfilled, and starting yet another band didn’t seem like the path to fulfillment. With a nest egg to carry him through a few “creative” years and the support of a loving wife, James decided to go all-in and make the dream of recording an album that was true to his musical vision a reality.

David de la Horton of Popatunes says James is “an amazingly talented guitarist singer/songwriter” and calls the record “essential listening for those with discerning taste”. Joe Wolfe-Mazeres of Ear to the Ground calls it one of his “favorite albums of the fall”. James will be touring in the spring of 2014 in support of the CD, and recording the follow-up for release in winter 2014.
