Introducing Haiti's Jephte aka Young Suspect
Jephte aka Young Suspect was born Jephte Hendrickson Blanc on April 24, 1987 in Haiti and lived there until he was 14 years old. His father-a radio host/Journalist and a pastor still lives and is very much involve in Haiti. the family economic situations diminish as the country itself deteriorates. Due to his father’s political involvement, Jephte and his family were constantly being threatened. Fearing for the safety of her family, Jephte’s mother sought a better life in America in 2002; while Young Suspect’s father stays devoted to his ministries and political fight. Eventually, the threats increased and culminated with his father being critically shot 5 times and left in a corner to die for speaking out against injustice in Haiti. He miraculously survived the shooting and continues to speak till this day.
Jephte was brought up playing the drums at church as a young child where he realized he loved all kinds of music. Music and playing soccer in the street became his way of escaping the harsh reality of his world. Playing the drums in church made it easy for him to put his life to a beat that people could physically feel and hear. Through his music and inspiring lyrics, he wants to touch all people regardless of their circumstances, ethnicity and background.
In 2005, Jephte began to understand the language of Hip-Hop and Rap and fell in love with it; He sees it as a form of poetry and therapy. In 2006, he wrote his first song “One step to the left-One step to the right.” The following year he was performing live in South Florida talent shows and the subsequent year in Georgia talent shows. In 2009, he was invited to perform for Upscale Records at a Hip-Hop artist music convention in Los Angeles, California where he performed live drawing cheers and tears from his excited audience. Jephte has performed, wrote and recorded more than 20 songs with original lyrics and music scores to date.
Although many are skeptical about the name “Young Suspect” he decided to keep it because it is an example of the unfair judgment and stereotypes that has been dubbed to many young males like himself. Jephte’s music depicted his struggles as member of an immigrant family. He uses personal accounts to encourage others in making positive life choices that will better their lives and their family lives in the future. His music focus on inspiring young males, single mothers and everyone regardless of their background and urge them to keep being positive. Jephte will continue to release music that will convey his struggles in life in the hope of healing and uplift individuals’ hearts regardless of their background.
