One Bands Becoming A Legend At The Austin Marathon

Once again, over 20,000 runners flooded downtown Austin last Sunday morning for a chance to run in Austin’s annual Live Strong marathon. Held on the second weekend of every February, this yearly event showcases runners from all over the world, as well as 26 local bands whose sole job is to pump up the runners as they pass by. Out of the 26 bands selected to play at this year’s marathon, however, only one band gave the crowd more than just hopeful originals and fancy covers. The Stickies, an Indie Rock band with over one-hundred songs in their repertoire, energized the runners by playing only two songs, without even stopping for water: Eye Of The Tiger and the original Rocky Theme Song.

The Stickies-Austin Marathon

“Our goal was for the runners to get an immediate second wind as they passed our band,” declared Stickies member Angelo Bachicha, “and both songs did just that.” Indeed, most runners cheered, raised their fists in triumph, or simply lengthened their stride as they passed Birds Barbershop on Congress Ave, where The Stickies were playing. Some fans even stopped to take pictures with the band in mid-marathon! “It was an amazing experience,” recalls Nicky Holiday, other member and singer of The Stickies, “and the story gets better every year.”

Actually, this is The Stickies fourth year to play the Austin Marathon, and they have been very persistent about playing ONLY Eye Of The Tiger, paired with the Rocky theme song, with no gaps of silence like many other bands. As if a reincarnation of Pink Floyd, The Stickies play these songs endlessly (since typically each runner only hears about 15-20 seconds of the song) and with unceasing passion, for over an hour and a half straight. “When so many runners are counting on you to lift their spirits,” proclaims Angelo, “I don’t see a point to ever stop playing until the very last runner is out of sight.”

Yes, The Stickies are rapidly becoming a household name and we can be sure to hear plenty more of them in the future.
