36 Years Between Albums For Chart-topping 1980’s Band
Adelaide, South Australia, Australia — Friday, November 27th, 2020 — In one of the world’s longest gaps between studio albums, melodic rock band Gutter has recently released a new compilation called Shoes and Ships and Sealing Wax – 36 years after their 1984 debut album was released.
Gutter, which was formed in 1973 and currently consists of Mark Stewart, Tony Huggett and Paul Howard, enjoyed considerable success with six top ten singles to its name in Zimbabwe and South Africa in the early 80’s, including a number one hit single and released a compilation of their hits – Cabbages and Kings – in 1984. The new album was recorded remotely across three continents and showcases original work which the band considered to be some of its best but which was never properly recorded and released.
According to Wikipedia’s ‘List of longest gaps between studio albums,’ Gutter makes it into the top 10 with the equal eighth-longest gap of 36 years. The album has been well received so far. One of Gutter’s new fans, accomplished pianist and musician Eddy Deegan said, “ I finished listening to the album in its entirety and it’s going to take me a little while to come back to earth. It’s absolutely brilliant.”
Mark notes, “It’s been a real international effort – Paul Howard and Tony Huggett live and work in Cape Town, and I’m in Adelaide, Australia. We have also have Michele Hill, now in Joburg, singing a track; Rod Holborn, our original lead guitarist now in Perth, Australia, adding some guitar tracks; and my brother Paul doing some inspirational piano tracks from the UK.”
This is an album worth a listen. Shoes & Ships and Sealing Wax delivers a very musical and honest listening experience. The gap of 36 years has been long but fans are saying well-worth the wait,

ABOUT
First formed in 1973, Gutter transformed from a schoolboy dance band to a chart-topper in the ’80s. The small gap of 36 years was followed by its second album release in July 2020 called Shoes and Ships and Sealing Wax. Their debut album Cabbages and Kings was released in 1984.
Now located in five studios on three continents, the band is currently recording and producing its third album.
The career dream of most young musicians is to play and record their original music – then life gets in the way and the dream is gone. Gutter, however, is a shining role model showing that dreams can always come true no matter your age or location.
For 30 years Gutter members Mark Stewart, Paul Howard and Tony Huggett remained friends and dreamed of reforming the band though they lived in different countries. The breakthrough came with the advent of rapid internet connectivity and affordable digital recording technology, and the rest is history. They have now mastered the art and science of remote digital recording and enjoy considerable artistic satisfaction from knowing their fans are listening across the globe.
Together with the evolution of technology, Gutter’s melodies and lyrical content have also evolved and matured over the 36 years. Gutter has always had ‘Soul’ and their music tackles a diversity of social issues, even disturbing ones like violence against children and child abduction.
The genre is not immediately obvious, some have described it as progressive rock, melodic rock and even pretentiously as intelligent rock. While the music may well be described as Intelligent, it is most certainly rock with strong melodies and arrangements which have finally breathed new life into some old but deserving songs.
