Origins of Orion Breaks Into Couer d'Alene Live Music Scene Through Open Mic Night

Couer d’Alene, Idaho — Wednesday, June 23rd, 2021 — Unprecedented and over prepared, Orion approached the Calypsos Coffee Roasters open mic M.C. Glenn on Monday June 7th. With a matter of fact attitude, he enthusiastically explained that he’d like a 45 minute time slot to play his entire set, that he’d like to build a stage complete with stage lighting, two laptops, stage props and also run a Google slides presentation showing lyrics for his entire collection of songs. He even made digital flyers promoting the show, advertising local talent with special guest “Origins of Orion.”

Orion was quickly reminded that this was simply an open mic, artists are allowed 15 minutes, and he would not be allowed to use his lights. Reluctantly, yet respectfully, Orion agreed to strip down his performance and adapted to the new paradigm presented to him. He quickly pivoted, instead choosing three songs for the Monday night audience at Calypsos. The selection was pulled from his newly released album “Wage Peace Vol. 1: Mortal Gods,” produced by MPM Producer. Opening with “Crown of Roses,” a vulnerable rap ballad with lyrics about breaking up with an ex-girlfriend over text message on Valentines day, followed by “$.@.d,” (or SAD), a bold diss track to the meat and dairy factory farms over trap beats, and closing with with fan favorite “Road to Freedom,” which includes lyrics about the growing homeless population living in tent communities around the Seattle area. He was moved to write this song after witnessing the rapidly growing homeless population in Seattle on the way home from his grandma’s coma-side deathbed. Following enthusiastic audience response to his performance, Orion was invited to come back to Calypsos and book a proper show. Orion will be back to Coeur d’Alene in the near future. While aggressive and harsh at times, Orion maintains that his music has a message of positivity, self-actualization, and empowerment. To which the artist comments: “If I can inspire others to follow their dreams, then I will consider it a job well done. I want listeners to know they should never talk themselves out of their passions, but should take measured action to achieve their goals instead, especially during times of discouragement. I was feeling down and stuck in a rut about not having access to recording software, and then I discovered the Garage Band app on my iPhone. As it turns out, it has everything I needed to get started with recording my own music, which has lead me to the release of this new album. It was the means to an end while I build myself a home studio and worked towards playing live. There is no one path to accomplishing your goals, the secret is to start and commit to the kaizen philosophy which is a Japanese philosophy of continuously improving working practices.
”

On a whim, solo artist Orion Swift drove up to Twin Lakes, ID from Orem, UT to visit his mother for her birthday. He has set his life up to maintain a work-from-the-road lifestyle with a remote day job for an education technology company, and nights and weekends as a server at Olive Garden, where he can transfer to any restaurant in the country. As a highly driven individual, it should come as no surprise that he would seize the opportunity of being in a new town to participate in the Monday night open mics at Calypsos in downtown Coeur d’Alene after being tipped off by a fellow Olive Garden co-worker.

Orion began cutting his teeth in the Seattle DIY metal and hardcore music scene from the young age of 15. A lifelong student of underground music, he sees his experiences as opportunity for growth, building a variety of sales, marketing, networking, promoting, songwriting, performing, and merchandising skills. He jokingly refers to this skillset as his “four year degree in street-o-nomics.” All that is to say he is no stranger to hitting the streets and pounding the pavement with the intention of promoting and enrolling others in his passions.

As a musician from the Emerald City, he has been involved in multiple bands such as Immortal Divination, which was founded by he and his father, IDOLS and Annulus. On the flip-side, his new project is unique, yet still familiar to fans of his previous groups. It combines elements of seemingly unrelated genres to form a unique blend of underground alternative punk, rap, metal and pop in a way that is authentic and raw.

Following enthusiastic audience response to his performance, Orion was invited to come back to Calypsos and book a proper show. Orion plans to return to the stage near his current location in Salt Lake City, Utah, and will be back to Coeur d’Alene someday in the near future for a proper show.
