Artist Interview: Eleftherios

Tell us about yourself and your music

I am a Birmingham based Hip Hop MC. I have always enjoyed music with a socio-political message and thus I gravitated toward Hip Hop and try to inject some of that sentiment into my music. My name ‘Eleftherios’ is actually my real given name, meaning ‘freedom’ in Greek, the language of my Parent’s native country Cyprus.

Talk to us more about your latest release

My latest release is a single, entitled ‘The Teacher’. It kind of reintroduces me as an educator as well as an MC (never a preacher though). It will feature on my new project, of the same name, to be released later this year.

What inspired you to write this release?

I was tired of so called ‘conscious’ MCs preaching rather than teaching in their tracks. I also wanted to give some opinions on what’s going on in the world. I guess the fact I’m studying Maths at Uni and plan to be a teacher, kind of adds some serendipity.

Any plans to release a video?

Most definitely, I’m working on some concepts for the visual right now!

Any plans to hit the road?

No confirmed dates as of yet but once the project is complete, I plan to tour the UK extensively…it’s going to be a good summer.

As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?

I’m still establishing my brand but I plan to follow in the footsteps of people like Nas and Tupac…a poet who relates to people’s struggle. I want to be the everyday man who’s trying to better himself. A relatable guy.

Who have you been listening to lately?

A lot of stuff. I’ve been highly anticipating Damian Marley’s upcoming album!! Of course, I have some artists who I listen to constantly, a la 2pac, Nas, Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, Akala, Lowkey, Wu Tang.

Tell us about your passions

I love to read, to socialise and to spend time with family. Books really inspire me to write and so do family. I’m an avid ‘world observer’ meaning I don’t subscribe to a political model or party but I do have my ‘political views’ for want of a better term-everything is political.

What else is happening next in your world?

I’m studying Maths at University so WORK, WORK, WORK!

Thanks for an awesome interview, Lefteri!
